Snapdragon 855 Becomes First Mobile SoC to Receive ‘Smart Card Equivalent’ Security Certification

Nowadays ‘security’ is becoming the biggest concern in the technology world. The hot topic around us is ‘Huawei’s US Ban’. When it comes to smartphones, the data breach could cite trouble for users and for OEMs as well. Concerning the trouble, Qualcomm technologies announced a new Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit. And the first chipset to get this is Qualcomm Snapdragon 855.

Mighty Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 is the company’s latest flagship chipset which is crushing onboard records and brings 5G network capability. With the new Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit, the chipset now has received Common Criteria EAL-4+ security-certification which is said to be the gold standard for smartcard hardware security assurance and testing.

That means now with the Snapdragon 855 processor having QSP will provide smartcard level of security. Further, the certification is internationally recognized which makes use of Android Strongbox Keymaster and Gatekeeper. So, in the future, with this new Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit capabilities like offline payment, transit, electronic ID, crypto wallets and trusted platform modules functions will be possible without the need of OEM’s own security chip.

Qualcomm’s Senior Director of Product Management, Jesse Seed said, “Completing the EAL-4+ security certification is a major milestone in our journey to bring smart card levels of security to our Snapdragon customers and users. Use cases that previously required separate security chips will now be possible fully integrated into Snapdragon 855 powered devices. This certification is a testament to the industry firsts that Snapdragon 855 brings to market and Qualcomm Technologies’ continued leadership in embedded security.”

So, with this new chipset unit, Qualcomm will ask OEMs to cut down the cost while providing a high level of security by maintaining the same higher performance of the smartphones. Well, according to the Qualcomm, the chipset of already in the mass production. So, in the future, there will be improved performance of smartphones along with a new level of security features.
