Qualcomm Unveiled New Snapdragon 215 Processor Built On 28nm Node

Qualcomm adds a new chipset in Snapdragon 200 series portfolio — Snapdragon 215. A new chipset unveiled today as it is listed over the Qualcomm’s official website. And it’s an upgrade over its predecessor’s chip — Snapdragon 212 which was launched back on July 28, 2015.

New Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 chipset packs 64-bit CPU, a faster GPU and also offers dual camera support. Now, we know, Snapdragon 200 series is introduced for entry-level smartphones. So, following the old manufacturing process, Qualcomm Snapdragon 215 is still built based on the 28nm node. It’s an older manufacturing process.

Moving ahead, let’s take an in-depth look at what it packs inside. So, the CPU department features four Cortex-A53 cores which can clock at the frequency 1.3GHz. Now, it’s a tangible upgrade over the Snapdragon 212 which packs Cortex-A7 cores. ARM claims, the Cortext-A53 are 50% faster than A7. So, you can now expect better performance from the entry-level smartphones. After all its a 64-bit CPU.

In the GPU department, it features Adreno 308. It’s a tiny upgrade, though. As Qualcomm claims, it will now offer 28% improved boost compared to the older one.

Qualcomm adds dual-camera support in this new Snapdragon 215 chipset. Thanks to the dual ISP. The Snapdragon 215 can add support the one 13MP camera or two 8MP camera modules. So, the phones can now carry telephoto and a depth sensor. Further, it also adds support for video recording up to 1080p resolution. However, the maximum supported display resolution is still 720p.

There are some regions where the new Snapdragon 215 has small improvements in wireless connection like the addition of Wi-Fi 5 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.2, X5 LTE model (150/50Mbps), LPDDR3 RAM, eMMC 4.5 built-in storage and UHS-I microSD cards.

You will see a downgrade in terms of the Qualcomm’s quick charge technology. The new Snapdragon 215 only supports Quick Charge 1.0 which is a downgrade from its old-gen Snapdragon 212 which has support for Quick Charge 2.0 as well. Qualcomm claims the phone has 3,000 mAh battery will last long up to 10+ hours on video playback and 20+ hours on voice calls.
