Qualcomm Skips TSMC, Deals With Samsung to Manufacture Snapdragon 865 Chipset

Samsung is now winning hearts for manufacturing processors of smartphones especially in 2019 for its 7nm EUV manufacturing process. Now, as per the new report coming from the Korean news source, Qualcomm skips TSMC to manufacture its Snapdragon 865 chipset. Instead, the company has gone for Samsung. However, the deal not yet complete.

Qualcomm has manufactured several flagship processors through TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing process. It includes Snapdragon 845 and mighty Snapdragon 855 chipsets. While with the Samsung manufactured Snapdragon 835 and Snapdragon 820. For upcoming Snapdragon 865, the company has gone for Samsung, because Qualcomm believes Samsung has more advanced manufacturing technology.

Over the course of years, we have seen the different process used to manufacture chipsets. Recalling the history (thanks to GSMArena), the 32nm to 14nm chipset manufactured using FD-SOI (Silicon on Insulator) process, while 14nm to 10nm chipset manufactured through Fin-Fet process, and further small chipset has been manufactured through EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Lithography) process. Compared to TSMC’s 7nm manufacturing technology, Samsung’s 7nm EUV technology is more advanced.

According to the reports, a new partnership with Samsung is still on the edge of beginning. So, we won’t see the new Snapdragon at 865 chipsets until 2020. However, looking at the info on the web, there will be two different versions of Snapdragon 865 processor – standard and with X55 5G modem.

Samsung is planning to expand the production lines of its EUV manufacturing foundry. Because the company has to stand up with the increased demand. The new productions lines will be put in play in February next year.

FYI, recently, Samsung and AMD have made an announcement of their multi-year strategic partnership. Under which Samsung will license AMD’s graphics IP. Put simply, under the partnership with the AMD, Samsung will integrate its GPU with the AMD’s GPU IP to gain better tunning. And installing it on the smartphone results to gain more SoC performance and power.
