Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 855 chipset in December 2018 and since then every major smartphone manufacturer launched at least one device with the flagship chipset. Qualcomm tends to announce one flagship chipset every year but looking at the increasing demand of gaming smartphone Qualcomm announced new Snapdragon 855 chipset with improved CPU and GPU performance. Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus is a minor improvement over Snapdragon 855. The improved chipset is launched to power the gaming headsets. The craze of mobile gaming is increasing and increasing demands making companies launch a more and more powerful smartphone with better performance.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus has minor CPU improvement and significant GPU improvement. Talking of numbers, Snapdragon 855 Plus high-performance core is clocked at 2.96GHz compared to 2.84GHz in Snapdragon 855. Which gives it nearly 5% performance boost but since its a gaming-centric phone the GPU is where it counts. The same Adreno 640 GPU is nearly 15% faster than the one it was in Snapdragon 855.

Apart from that, everything else inside the Snapdragon 855 Plus remains the same. It packs the same DSP and ISP module in the chipset. For the future upgradability, Snapdragon 855 Plus supports external X50 5G modem.

We don’t have an exact figure how good is Snapdragon 855 Plus in terms of benchmark result so we have to wait for few months to see smartphone launching with the improved and best in the class chipset.

Qualcomm confirmed that the smartphone running on Snapdragon 855 Plus will be launched in the second half of 2019 so we may see more than one gaming smartphone to launch with the flagship chipset.

Also, The Asus ROG 2 smartphone is around the corner that might launch with Snapdragon 855 Plus chipset. It will have a 120hz display but not sure if it’s LCD or OLED so we have to wait for more leaks or we will get all the information at the launch.
