Huawei’s Mate 30 Pro could be the first smartphone to pack 7nm chipset made on Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) process. The chipset will be still made in TSMC’s foundries but with EUV technology.
Apple was the first company to launch a smartphone with a 7nm chipset, However, Huawei launched Kirin 980 first. Both the chipsets are made on 7nm technology but on FinFET process. The EUV Process allows 20% greater transistor density.
The new Kirin 985 chipset will come with higher clock speed and some power saving features too. Although, CPU and GPU architecture will remain the same as Kirin 980. The upcoming Kirin 985 will come with 5G modem inbuilt. So most probably Huawei Mate 30 Pro will have 5G band support.
Huawei is preparing to be more self-sufficient. At this moment Huawei is using 45% of their own chipset. While Huawei’s high-end devices using their own In-house chipset Huawei needs to rely on Qualcomm for their mid-range devices. Huawei plans to use 60% of their own chipset by the end of this year. So we can expect a variety of mid-range chipset this year.
HiSilicon Kirin 985 will launch in Q3 2019 with 7nm EUV tech which will be marketed as 7+ nm chipset. The EUV process is superior to the TSMC’s FinFET technology and every chipset manufacturer will use this process for their upcoming chipset.
