Asus Zenfone 6 or you may like to call it Asus 6z is now available in India. The phone sports a new piece of tech – Flip Camera module. With the flagship internals and decent pricing, the phone is aimed to take on new OnePlus 7. It’s good to see technology is now going further up in the process chart and Asus is now the first brand for ‘automated flip camera’ module on the phone.
To place a Flip Camera module was not Asus’s plan at first. The company went through five different design and the sixth one is the Flip Camera system that we have right now. Smartphone manufacturers have come up with clever solutions to house front camera system and offer bezel-less display. First up a notch, then punch-hole, pop-up module, slider design and not flip camera module. Sorry if I forgot one. But, even though these techniques so far look perfect, they have their own advantages and disadvantages.
Asus Prototypes in Real

In the lab, Asus was working with different designs to hide the notch and offer higher screen-to-body ration design. As we can see in the image, the first prior solution was punch-hole display. But, Asus didn’t walk for it.
There are five different prototypes Asus went for before deciding the design of Asus Zenfone 6. Following are the prototypes (the number shows devices from left to right);
- Notch – of course, it’s being the old fashioned way now.
- Super narrow bezels – that would house the camera and other sensors and narrow chin
- A half slider – with half sliding rear face that only slides up for selfie camera
- Pop-up camera – not a clever solution, at least for now because it opens the way for more damage
- Two-way slider – if you slide up it reveals selfie camera and if you slide down it opens speakers.
- Flip Camera – this is what we have right now.

There were Two Different Designs for Flip Camera Module As Well
Even though Asus has designed two different design for a flip camera module. And approached one for the final design. As we know the Zenfone 6 comes with two rear cameras and in the final design, those are horizontally placed. Asus has also designed the module which was having the camera sensors placed vertically.

But what could be a reason for the horizontal module? Simple. More space for the logic board. It was a challenge for Asus to place everything including massive 5000 mAh battery that also takes up a lot more space with the flip camera and logic board. So, Asus came up with a new idea. They have used two layer logic board in the phone that consumes less area and fits well inside the remaining space.
It’s quite a nice piece of engineering. Asus Zenfone 6 aka Asus 6z is offering a lot for less. I am happy to see such kind of engineering in a small size. It doesn’t matter whether we buy it or not. But, definitely, we should keep our self updated with the what’s going on.
